Movie Review: Dumbo (2019)
This film is directed by Tim Burton and it stars Colin Farrell, Danny Devito, Michael Keaton, Eva Green, Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins.
This film is the live action version of Dumbo. It’s about a baby elephant that is born with larger than usual ears and can fly. The circus is not doing well financially and when the owner discovers what Dumbo is capable of he finds himself in the ideal position to save his circus. However, this new attraction not only helps the circus owner but draws the attention of others.
The animated version of Dumbo was one of the films that impacted my childhood. I was hoping to relieve some of those memories and walk out of this film with swollen eyes and nostalgia. I was also hoping that my older daughter (14 yrs old) would become a fan of this movie. I walked out of this film underwhelmed and a bit disappointed. This film had no magic, no heart (for me). I’m not entirely sure if it’s the acting or the script but I felt nothing whatsoever. I didn’t care for the kids nor their father. I feel that the kids may have been miscast as I felt no chemistry between the kids and their dad and I felt nothing between the kids and Dumbo. I think I felt more chemistry between Dumbo and Colette (Eva Green). Danny Devito’s character was ok as he had some of the few funny lines (I can count the number of times I laughed with one hand) but I didn’t find myself caring for his character either. Keaton’s character was the typical laughable villain that towards the end I was surprised that Michael Keaton agreed to play this part. I was sitting there just hoping for this movie to be over. It can’t be a great sign when I find myself looking at my phone and trying to calculate how much longer I have left before I can leave. Perhaps I’m being too hard on it, but I was expecting more from this movie. Few things I did enjoy were some of the visuals and of course the adorable and lovable Dumbo (and maybe on the side it was nice to have a little Batman reunion). If you guys have seen it please let me know your thoughts! Do you agree with me or not? Why??
I give this film a 5 out of 10
