Movie Review: Aladdin (2019)

This film is directed by Guy Ritchie and it stars Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud, Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kensari and Billy Magnussen.

This film is the live action adaptation of the beloved animated film Aladdin.

I grew up watching the animated version of this movie so for nostalgic reasons I went to see this movie. I admit I was one of the few people who didn’t mind the trailers so I didn’t go into this film with low expectations. Oh my!!! I had tons of fun with this movie!! I had a smile on my face for nearly the entire film. Fantastic visuals (costumes) but not great CGI (too obvious). Naomi Scott as Jasmine is pure gold as not only is she gorgeous but has an amazing vocal talent. The new song she gets to sing is amazing and she hits a home run with it. Mena Massoud is the spitting image of the animated version of Aladdin and he did a fantastic job, I secretly have a crush on Mena. Aladdin and Jasmine are definitely one of the most attractive live action couple of these past Disney films. Their chemistry helps this film but I strongly believe that the chemistry between Mena and Will is what carries this film. The one who stole the show was Will Smith as the genie. He made the character his own all while paying homage to the Robin Williams’ genie. Will Smith put his own charm into the genie and I was beyond thrilled when he did his two big numbers “A Friend Like Me” and “Prince Ali”. I thought I would be bothered by the blue genie but I had no issue whatsoever. I didn’t have an issue with Jafar (as many do) but I do wish I could have seen a giant snake at one point. I think this film does a great job in incorporating new ideas into this film and I loved what they did with genie in this movie. I was a fan of the friend of Jasmine and she nearly stole the movie for me. There is a party scene where they have a dance and Mena Massoud is a great dancer but I thoroughly enjoyed that whole sequence. Do I prefer this one over the animated or vice versa? I’m not sure yet as I’ll need a second viewing to determine that. Please go watch this movie.

I give this film a 7 out of 10
