Movie Review: Late Night
This film is directed by Nisha Ganatra and it stars Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Amy Ryan, Reid Scott, Ike Barinholtz, John Lithgow, Paul Walter, and Denis O’Hare.
This film is about a Late Night host whose career has been declining for the past several years and finds herself in a position to try new things and ideas to try and save her job and show. She decides to hire a female writer and her entire life changes as a result of the new writer and her past catching up to her.
Watched this film and I liked it very very much. It’s an original, refreshing, and funny film. I loved that it addresses topics that are currently prominent in our society. Some examples are the lack of female writers, lack of people of color who write, slut-shaming, age discrimination, female comedians, and even looking down at YouTubers and their content. Emma Thompson is brilliant in this film her character evolution and development is moving and smartly portrayed. Mindy Kaling is adorable, funny and her character is very much relatable. Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling work great together and the development of their relationship and eventually friendship is relatable and believable. The supporting cast was great too! John Lithgow was great as an important character in this film. The cast who plays the writing team is great too. Their chemistry and dynamic is evident and works perfectly in this film. I was a fan of some of the shade that is thrown between these characters. Shade is thrown to the majority of the writers, white males, as well as the only writer of color (Mindy Kaling) who of course doesn’t let them get away with it so she refuses to stay quiet. This film is unique in the number of women in front and behind the camera; it stars two women, it’s written by a woman (Mindy Kaling), and directed by a woman, so if you want to support and/or advocate for female representation in movies then please go see it!!
Just as an FYI I watched this film in the Arclight in Hollywood and it was followed by a Q&A with Mindy Kaling, Nisha Ganatra (director) and three other members of the cast. Some interesting facts I learned was the Mindy wrote this script with Emma Thompson in mind as Emma is Mindy’s favorite actress. This film was shot in 25 days. The entire cast spoke about Emma Thompson and how smart she is and how humbled she was throughout the entire film. The director directed some episodes of the Mindy Project so she and Mindy have had some working experience together. Please go see this film!!
I give this film an 8.5 out of 10
